Yoga and Naturopathy system of Medicine

Yoga & Naturopathy is a system of man building in harmony with the constructive principles of Nature on physical, mental, moral and spiritual planes of living. It has great health promotive, disease preventive and curative as well as restorative potential.

Yoga & Naturopathy is an art and science of healthy living and a drugless system of healing based on well-founded philosophy. It has its own concept of health and disease and also principle of treatment. Naturopathy is a very old science. We can find a number of references in our Vedas and other ancient texts. The morbid matter theory, concept of vital force and other concepts upon which Naturopathy is based are already available in old texts.

The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to join" or "to yoke". Originated in ancient India, Yoga typically means 'union' between the mind, body and spirit. It involves the practice of physical postures and poses, which is sometimes referred to as 'asana' in Sanskrit. As the name suggests, the ultimate aim of practicing Yoga is to create a balance between the body and the mind and to attain self-enlightenment. In order to accomplish it, Yoga makes use of different movements, breathing exercises, relaxation technique and meditation. Yoga is associated with a healthy and lively lifestyle with a balanced approach to life.

Yoga is one of the six systems of Vedic philosophy. Maharishi Patanjali, rightly called “The Father of Yoga” compiled and refined various aspects of Yoga systematically in his “Yoga Sutras” (aphorisms). He advocated the eight folds path of Yoga, popularly known as “Ashtanga Yoga” for all-round development of human beings. They are: - Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. These components advocate certain restraints and observances, physical discipline, breath regulations, restraining the sense organs, contemplation, meditation and samadhi. These steps are believed to have a potential for improvement of physical health by enhancing circulation of oxygenated blood in the body, retraining the sense organs thereby inducing tranquility and serenity of mind.

Naturopathy & Yoga are not only independence and ideal systems of medicine (healing science) but also the way of life. They are as old as Mother Nature. Naturopathy and yoga are scientific, time tested, effective, simple, safe and inexpensive and hence ideally suited for our country, in respect to geographical, social, cultural and economic condition. Only naturopathy and yoga can make an individual “Self-help-health-sufficiency” as advocated by Mahathma Gandhiji.

People are becoming more concerned about their health as a result of increased stress and an unbalanced lifestyle in today's world. Yoga and Naturopathy is based on the body's inherent ability to heal itself, and hence promotes healing and self-cleansing. This process places a premium on boosting immunity and detoxifying the body. These are necessary for maintaining a healthy body and mind. As a result, someone who has completed a Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) will concentrate on working closely with a patient's symptoms and reactions in order to ensure that the treatment provided is, in most circumstances, individualised. Patients' emotional predispositions, biomechanics and biochemistry are all used in the treatment of illness.

The Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) is basically a five and half year programme which includes one year internship. More than half of the coursework in the BYNS programme is the same as in the MBBS programme. A Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (BNYS) graduate has understanding of yoga and Naturopathy therapy and practice, as well as a significant advantage in the patient care and service in the community. In addition, post-graduation (MD) in Yoga and Naturopathy of three years full time course on

MD(Yoga) MD(Naturopathy) MD(Acupuncture & Energy medicine )

also started to develop specialists who stand out for their competence and skills.

Yoga & Naturopathy consists of therapies using natural elements;

Hydrotherapy using water Heliotherapy using sun Mud therapy
Chromo therapy using colours Magneto therapy Massage therapy
Manipulative therapy Fasting therapy Diet & Herbal therapy
Acupuncture Acupressure with reflexology, etc

Yoga & Naturopathy by definition is more than a system of curing aches and pains and is more a ‘way of life’. Naturopathy believes in treating the root cause of the disease and not just the symptoms. Combination of Yoga therapy and Naturopathy are the best-suited therapy of choice for the patients in the current scenario. A long side these natural therapies, counseling on lifestyle modifications including diet, physical activity, sleep and stress management are provided, which are tailor-made based on an individual’s lifestyle and practical feasibility in incorporating the prescribed lifestyle modifications in their everyday life.

Many patients have given positive feedback about the interventions and how it was helping them after Yoga and Naturopathy treatments. Many studies are in progress with Yoga and Naturopathy interventions for Non communicable diseases (NCDs), COVID and post COVID care management along with conventional care treatment and outcome of these studies will definitely to be a step forward to the mission mentioned by “Journal of Indian system of Medicine (JIM)” for creating the evidence based Yoga and Naturopathy researches to the world.
